Community Arts/Cultural Activities Grants (including Youth Program
In 1992, the City Council established the City Grants Program. This program offers
limited funding to community-based non-profit organizations that provide needed human
services assistance and arts/cultural activities to Pleasanton residents. In FY 1995/96,
the City recognized the need to address youth services, and a youth category was
established. The arts/culture and youth components of the former City Grant program
were combined to form the current "Community Grant" (CG) program. For many grant
cycles, the City Council has annually allocated $40,000 in General Fund dollars each to
the arts/cultural activity projects and to youth projects. This year, there are unspent funds
from prior years, enabling the Civic Arts Commission to recommend more than $40,000
in grant funds. Community grant awards are typically limited to a maximum of$7,500 for
each individual grant.
Information on the CG program was provided at the required virtual application workshop
on December 7, 2022. In response, 10 applications were received in the arts/culture
category with an aggregate request of$63,000, while six applications were received in
the youth category with an aggregate request of$40,000.
Arts/culture applications were reviewed by the Civic Arts Commission at its meeting on
March 6 (Attachment 4). Youth applications were reviewed by the Youth Commission at
its meeting on March 8 (Attachment 5). At each meeting, specific agency representatives
made presentations and addressed commissioners' questions.
Table 5 provides a summary of the programs reviewed by the Civic Arts Commission and
its funding recommendations. The four submitted application requests by Pacific
Chamber Orchestra totaled $25,000. Due to the cost per resident and total funding
request of$25,000, the commission recommended not funding one of the four
applications for the Holiday Concert program.
Table 6 provides a summary of the programs reviewed by the Youth Commission and its
funding recommendations. Teen Esteem did not attend the March meeting. The Youth
Commission recommended Teen Esteem receive the full amount of its request, but
further recommended a representative attend the City Council meeting when a vote to
approve funding is held.
