BACKGROUND
The City employs many cybersecurity solutions to protect the network, systems, critical
infrastructure, data, and endpoint computing. The information Technology Department
intended to enhance and elevate the City's cybersecurity posture by deploying a
solution that could inspect and analyze network traffic and respond with real-time active
autonomous capabilities to intercept and neutralize cyber threats and potential attacks.
In summer 2022, Darktrace was invited to install its solution toward testing for proof-of-
concept. Darktrace is an advanced AI-powered software that uses machine learning
algorithms to detect and respond to cyber threats in real time. It is known for its ability to
detect and respond to never-before-seen threats, making it an optimal choice. After 30
days in place, the Darktrace platform was well demonstrating its capabilities.
Fortunately, the City did not receive any advanced attacks, although the Darktrace
solution did activate and alert to numerous anomalous behaviors of varying threat
models some of which did have malicious intent and required remediation.
DISCUSSION
Staff believes investing in a reliable and robust cybersecurity solution such as Darktrace
would significantly mitigate the City's risks and enhance overall security posture.
Among the benefits of purchasing Darktrace are advanced threat detection and
response capabilities in that Darktrace's machine learning algorithms can detect and
respond to known and unknown cyber threats in real-time, significantly reducing the
City's risk of data breaches and cyber-attacks; automated response in that Darktrace
can automatically respond to cyber threats, thus reducing the burden on Information
Technology staff and minimizing response time; and centralized control in that
Darktrace provides a centralized dashboard for monitoring and managing all security-
related activities, making it more efficient and effective for Information Technology staff
to monitor and respond to threats.
The City negotiated directly with Darktrace to secure a price lower than available from
resellers who provided competitive quotes and from the National Association of State
Procurement Officials (NASPO) contracts, a cooperative purchasing agreement
available to municipalities.
Submit by: Fiscal Review: Approved by:
u`
AlleHa and Susan Hsieh Gerry Beaudin
Inf ation Technology Finance Director City Manager
Director
Attachments:
1.
