Objective Desjgn standards tor Housing Sjtes <br />APPENDIX B <br />GLOSSARY <br />Active Fro ntage: Frontage of a building incorporating features that promote an active pedes trian <br />environment on the g round floor of a building and provide activity and visual interest to the people in the <br />space and building. Active frontage requirements may be met in a number of ways including <br />conformance to the design requirements of these Objective Design Standards, and in mixed use buildings <br />incorporating ground floor uses that attract walk-in customers such as retail shops , eating and drinking <br />establishments, etc., or by locating primary building lobbies and active residential common spaces with <br />direct access from the sidewalk such as fitness rooms and community rooms . <br />A ll ey/Pa rkin g A rea: Public or private vehicular drive that is used to access private garages, structured <br />parking, and/or surface parking. Any access roads on site that are not internal streets/drives are also <br />considered alleys . Alleys are requ i red to comply with the standards in Section AS. <br />C lass l Bicycle Parkin g: Bike parking spaces in secure, weather-protected facilities intended for use as <br />long-term , overnight, and work-day bicycle storage. Primarily used by dwelling unit residents , <br />nonresidential occupants, and employees. Can include lockers or racks in locked or attended facilities. <br />C la ss 2 Bicycl e Parkin g : Bike parking spaces located in a publicly-accessible, highly visible location <br />intended for transient or short-term use by visitors, guests, and patrons to the building or use. Usually in <br />the form of racks. <br />Gl azin g: The infill material , usually transparent or translucent glass, or combination thereof, used in a <br />framed window or door assembly to provide transparency to the exterior or admit views to the interior. <br />Inte rnal Stree t/Drive: Private streets or drives that provide vehicular and pedestrian access within a <br />site, to buildings not directly accessed off existing or futu re public streets . Internal Street frontages are <br />required to comply the standards in Section A4. <br />Pase o (Pe destrian walk): A publ ic or private pedestrian right of way that provides access through a site <br />or to building(s) entrances. Paseos are required to comply with the standards in Section A6 . <br />Prim a ry building e ntrance/e ntry: A single entrance to a bui lding that provides access to the use with <br />the maximum area in the building . A building can have several uses and more than one separate entrance <br />for each of those uses , but a building can have only one primary entrance ; a ll others are secondary <br />bui lding entrances. <br />Public Stree t: A public owned right of way that provides pedestrian, vehicular, and/or bike access. <br />Pub lic Street frontages are required to comply with Section A3 . <br />Segme nt (s treet/dri ve): A portion of a street or a drive located between two intersect ions or an <br />intersection and a dead-end. <br />Signific a nt A rchitectura l Ele me nt: <br />a . A corner tower or elevated corner roof volume that is at least 5 feet taller than the adjacent <br />bu il ding elements . <br />b . An open space plaza dedicated for public use that is sized such each dimension is at least IO feet. <br />c.
