BACKGROUND
In 2017, the Pleasanton Library conducted demographic research, surveys and
community focus groups to better understand the community's interests and develop a
strategic plan to help shape programs, services and collections. This work was then
leveraged and updated for a Library and Recreation Department Strategic Plan in 2018
when the Library and Community Services departments merged. In 2019, the Library
and Recreation Department Strategic Plan 2019-2024 was launched.
This strategic plan, and the department, are centered around the values of integrity,
customer service, collaboration, innovation and inclusiveness. These values weave
together to create safe and welcoming programs and spaces for all members of the
community.
DISCUSSION
The Pleasanton Library has enhanced its programs, services and collections by
focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion. New tools, metrics and program planning
techniques have been implemented, along with regular surveys and outreach. Multiple
languages are being used for communication and inclusive programs are being
introduced.
This programming is one example of how a department's work plan can support the
City's Diversity, Equityand Inclusion goals. In the presentation, Library staff will provide
information on how diversity, equity and inclusion are enhancing Library programs,
services and collections.
Submitted by: Approve by:
Heidi Murphy Gerry Beaudin
Director of Library and Recreation City Manager
Page 2 of 2
