CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT <br /> June 7, 2022 <br /> Library and Recreation <br /> TITLE: APPROVE APPOINTMENT OF THO NGUYEN AS TEEN POET <br /> LAUREATE FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2022/23 <br /> SUMMARY <br /> In August 2012, the City of Pleasanton began the formal process to recruit and appoint <br /> Teen Poets Laureate. The primary role of the City's Teen Poet Laureate is to promote <br /> the appreciation of poetry and literary arts in the community throughout the school year. <br /> Past Teen Poet Laureate projects include readings on school campuses, open mic <br /> nights, readings at civic events, afterschool library poetry sessions, writing workshops, <br /> and creative poems set to music in collaboration with the Firehouse Art Center's High <br /> School Music Collaborative. Community service hours are provided for this volunteer <br /> position. <br /> Applications were accepted at the Pleasanton Library in the months of March and April <br /> and candidates participated in interviews, shared samples of their writings, and provided <br /> community references. From the pool of applicants, Tho Nguyen from Amador Valley <br /> High School was recommended for the appointment. <br /> JOINT LIBRARY AND CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION <br /> Recommend appointment of Tho Nguyen as Teen Poet Laureate for School Year <br /> 2022/23. <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> Approve appointment of Tho Nguyen as Teen Poet Laureate for School Year 2022/23. <br /> FINANCIAL STATEMENT <br /> The Teen Poet Laureate receives no remuneration. Any expenses related to the Teen <br /> Poet Laureate program, i.e. supplies for workshops, poetry readings, and teen events <br /> are allocated in the Library and Recreation Department's operation budget, 00150407- <br /> 433154 and are not to exceed $1,000 for the school year. <br />
