4
THE CITY OF
- _ r CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
pLEASANTON.
April 12, 2022
Engineering
Library and Recreation
TITLE: REVIEW AND APPROVE THE LOCATION OF PICKLEBALL COURTS AT
MUIRWOOD COMMUNITY PARK AS PART OF THE COURT
RESURFACING PROJECT, CIP NO. 22744
SUMMARY
The sport of pickleball has increased significantly in popularity over the last decade.
Pickleball play in Pleasanton has also increased and the construction of dedicated
pickleball courts was identified as a need in the city during the Capital Improvement
Program (CIP) Workplan process for fiscal years (FY) 2021/22 — 2024/25.
To meet that need, staff conducted research, discussed pickleball with other cities and
presented potential pickleball locations within Pleasanton to the Parks and Recreation
Commission at their November 18, 2021 , meeting. Based on that presentation, the
Parks and Recreation Commission recommended locating pickleball courts at Muirwood
Community Park. Staff is proposing the construction of six dedicated pickleball courts to
replace two of the four existing tennis courts at Muirwood Community Park as part of
the FY 2022/23 Annual Court Resurfacing Project.
On December 16, 2021 , staff submitted a Proposition 68 grant application for $227,000
to help fund the court resurfacing project at Muirwood Community Park, including
conversion of two existing tennis courts to six pickleball courts.
Public outreach was conducted at the farmers market on February 5, 2022, and at
Muirwood Community Park on February 12, 2022, to obtain input from the community,
pickleball players and the Muirwood neighborhood.
RECOMMENDATION
Review and approve the conversion of two tennis courts to six pickleball courts at
Muirwood Community Park.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
The pickleball courts will be funded through the Annual Court Resurfacing Project, CIP
No. 22744, and the Proposition 68 grant award. Available funding totals $477,000
($227,000 from the grant and $250,000 from CIP No. 22744). Expenditures are
expected to utilize all the available funding.
