She listed many laws such as bicycle <br /> helmets and swimming pool fences exist to protect children but added none of those items are lethal <br /> weapons. She stated they cannot be cavalier about guns. She added this ordinance is not a gun <br /> restriction but a child protection measure. She stated she looks forward to Pleasanton joining other <br /> local cities in passing a safe gun storage ordinance. <br /> Anne Matarrese Everton thanked the City Council for approving the safe gun storage ordinance. She <br /> noted how dramatically safe storage reduces home gun accidents. She commended Pleasanton Police <br /> Chief David Swing for his thorough presentation of safety data at the last meeting. She noted homes <br /> can still be defended swiftly even with the safe gun storage and added the Pleasanton Police <br /> Department (PPD) offers free trigger locks to residents. She noted, in addition to child safety concerns, <br /> unsecured guns are more likely to be stolen and contribute to crimes elsewhere. <br /> Dara Hogue stated one-third of American children live in homes with firearms with 43% of those homes <br /> having at least one unlocked firearm. She reported firearm-based suicide attempts are far more often <br /> fatal than those involving drug overdoses. She noted the risks of accidental shooting death and suicide <br /> are four times higher in homes with guns present. She added gun shootings by children rose <br /> dramatically during the pandemic. She reported the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends <br /> guns in homes should be stored locked and unloaded with ammunition locked separately. She urged <br /> the Council to approve Item 16. <br /> Mayor Brown closed the public hearing. <br /> Mayor Brown confirmed trigger locks are available at no charge from the PPD. <br /> Councilmember Testa moved to approve the Consent Calendar, seconded by Councilmember Arkin. <br /> In response to Councilmember Narum, Councilmember Testa confirmed this motion includes the <br /> modified calendar for Item 2. <br /> City Council <br /> 1.
