From:
To:Jennifer Hagen
Subject:Community feedback of High Density Housing proposal on Donlon Elem. Field
Date:Thursday, January 13, 2022 9:59:47 AM
Good morning Ms. Hagen,
The city of Pleasanton provided your contact information as the point of contact for feedback
regarding the Donlon Elementary field as an area of consideration for high density housing, or
housing of any density.
I live in Val Vista, and I have a current 1st grader at Donlon, and a younger child who will be
attending Donlon for kindergarten in the near future.
The word is spreading among Val Vista neighbors and parents of Donlon students about the
idea of using the Donlon field for housing. Even my 1st grader, who I mentioned it to, could
tell you it was a harmful plan.
In the event that you do not have students at Donlon, the pick up and drop off situation at the
most impacted elementary school in the PUSD is dire. The principal has spent countless days
trying to fix it this year.
High density housing on that field is an extreme difference from adding additional classrooms
for 4th and 5th grade to help with the problem of unavailable placement for students in the
area. When we moved here over the summer, our 1st grader was put in another school before
being able to move over to Donlon.
The traffic safety is a big issue. It is very dangerous around school pick up and drop off in the
front and back of the school. The Principal, Mrs. Gate's solution to this is telling parents often
to use the back area where the field is to help with the congestion in the front (exactly where
the proposal for more housing and congestion is being proposed).
SUVs and mini vans line Denker Dr. (where the housing would be) on both sides, with kids
and parents darting out, and bad sight line at the cross walk exists with large vehicles parked
next to the crosswalk. If 28 residential units with 2 cars on average are placed there, that will
mean cars parked on both sides of Denker constantly, presenting a grave danger to the
students. My 2 children will be walking and riding bikes to school over the next 8 years in that
exact area. Is their safety, or even lives, worth it?
Not only the traffic issues, but haven't students gone through enough with their education and
attending school during a pandemic to have the beautiful and only view of the park/green
space taken away from them (which would be eviscerated with housing)? The field is used
during some recesses to give the students additional outdoor space to not get sick. There is no
other grass area for the students to play, other than blacktop. The green space Donlon has for
students should be investigated before proposing housing. It is cruel to all the children and
staff there to move forward before that.
I hope I am not the only ones providing this feedback, that my 1st grader also wants to share
on Tuesday when it is discussed. Every neighbor on Taffy Ct that was on the neighborhood
group text about this proposal was in staunch agreement that the proposal is cruel to the
