In response to Councilmember Narum, Assistant Director Crose advised lighting beyond the current pathway lighting has been contemplated. The community has requested no additional lights other than the current pathway lighting. Councilmember Narum advised she is leaning more towards the Pleasanton Rise playground. She expressed concern regarding the maintenance of the bird and noted it is no good if it is not easily repairable. She reiterated the need to have more shade and expressed support for the quiet area. In response to Councilmember Narum, Ms. Chavez reported there are five handicapped spaces proposed in the parking lot and noted they are in the process of studying a potential increase in available handicapped spaces. Councilmember Narum advised she received feedback that more handicap parking spaces are needed and believes those spaces are more important than regular parking stalls. Councilmember Narum expressed support for the item and noted it complements the work done so far with Sunflower Hill. She noted she would be happy with either concept. Councilmember Balch advised he believes more handicapped parking stalls are needed given the nature of the facility. He would like to make sure that all handicapped parking stalls are compliant. He expressed concern regarding specialized maintenance for the bird. Mayor Brown noted she loved both concepts but expressed support for Pleasanton Rise Playground because there are more colors and more things to touch. She noted she is not a fan of the bird concept and would like to consider something like a large flower. She likes the idea of the rainbow theme and stressed the importance of shade structures be it tree canopies or shade. She noted shaded picnic structures would be nice for people to wait while their children are playing. Mayor Brown opened public comment. There being no speakers, public comment was closed. Councilmember Testa stressed the need for shade. She suggested changing the bird for butterflies. Councilmember Narum stressed the need for shade and more color. She feels strongly that whichever concept is chosen, that maintenance and repair can be done onsite by City staff as nothing is more disappointing to a child than going to the park and something they are excited to use is broken. She looks forward to the day this becomes a reality. Councilmember Arkin expressed support for the bird and believes it has a symbolic nature but does understand the maintenance issue. She expressed support for shade, seating, parking, quiet areas, and activities for a wide range of abilities and ages. Councilmember Balch noted he is not a fan of the bird but is looking for a durable element. He expressed support for Pleasanton Rise Playground and highlighted elements from both concepts that he liked. He noted he like the boardwalk feel and look from the second concept. He expressed excitement that the project is moving forward. Mayor Brown expressed support for the project and reminded City Council that it needs to be mindful of the budget while working through the designs. She thanked residents for their input and feedback. MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL Councilmember Arkin requested a resolution in support of Afghan refugees and noted some of the nearby cities have passed similar resolutions.
