School officials may consult with the SRO at any time to determine whether said
information/ evidence should be shared.
9. School administration shall in a timely manner notify the SROs with the names of
specific individuals who are not allowed on school property, and, if necessary, shall
notify the SRO of any anticipated problems resulting from disciplinary action taken
against a student.
10. School administration will work cooperatively with the CITY to make any needed
adjustments to the SRO program throughout the year.
11. PUSD will provide the CITY with updated copies of laws, rules, regulations, and
school board policies applicable to employees of the PUSD including but not limited
to laws, rules, regulations and policies regarding access to confidential student
records and/or the detention, investigation, and searching of students on school
premises.
12. PUSD acknowledges and agrees that the SROs presence does not relieve the district
or school staff of their legal requirements under the mandatory reporting laws of
California to report child abuse or endangerment in writing to outside authorities.
13. School officials will ensure that student disciplinary matters remain the responsibility
of school staff and not the SRO. Enforcement of the code of conduct is the
responsibility of teachers, school staff, and school administrators. The SRO will
refrain from being involved in the enforcement of disciplinary rules that do not
constitute violations of criminal law or are criminal violations eligible for diversion.
ENFORCEMENT
Although the SROs have been placed in a formal educational environment, they are not relieved
of the official duties as a law enforcement officer. The SROs may intervene when it is necessary
to prevent any criminal act or maintain a safe school environment. Citations may be issued, and
arrests made when appropriate and in accordance with California state law and department
policy. The SRO, when possible, will make the physical arrest of students outside the presence of
other non-involved students. The objective is to preserve the privacy of juveniles. The SRO and
the Pleasanton PD will have the final decision on whether criminal charges shall be submitted to
the Juvenile Justice System for consideration of charges. However, the SRO will prioritize youth
diversion programs as the primary option instead of the juvenile justice system, when
appropriate.
The CITY reserves the right to temporarily remove the SRO in the event that additional officers
are needed during a critical incident or natural disaster.
