The rental vacancy <br />stands at 4.6 percent, while the ownership vacancy rate is 0.8 percent. Of the vacant units, the <br />most common type of vacancy is Other Vacant (see Figure A-33)6. <br />Throughout the Bay Area, vacancies make up 2.6 percent of the total housing units, with homes <br />listed for rent; units used for recreational or occasional use, and units not otherwise classified <br />(other vacant) making up the majority of vacancies. The Census Bureau classifies a unit as vacant <br />if no one is occupying it when census interviewers are conducting the American Community <br />Survey or Decennial Census. Vacant units classified as "for recreational or occasional use" are <br />those that are held for short-term periods of use throughout the year.
