THE CITY OF
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
PLEASANTON.
October 19, 2021
City Council
TITLE: ADOPT PROCLAMATION DECLARING THE CITY OF PLEASANTON'S
SUPPORT FOR AFGHAN REFUGEES IN THE BAY AREA
SUMMARY
Following the City Council's request at its October 5, 2021, meeting the City Council will
consider adopting a proclamation declaring the City of Pleasanton's support for Afghan
refugees that are now locating in the Bay Area.
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt the attached proclamation in support of Afghan refugees locating in the Bay Area.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
There is no financial impact with adoption of the proclamation.
BACKGROUND
In April 2021, President Biden announced that United States military forces would leave
Afghanistan by September 11, 2021. Following the withdrawal of US forces, the Taliban
initiated several attacks on Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, which led to
the collapse of the Afghan government. Many Afghan citizens who supported our
country's service members while they were serving in Afghanistan have fled the
country, seeking refuge in the United States. Those seeking refuge in the United States
are facing a multitude of challenges when they arrive, and as they transition to their new
life here.
DISCUSSION
As the Bay Area is home to the largest concentration of Afghan Americans in the United
States, the City Council requested a proclamation to demonstrate the City's support for
the Afghan community broadly and in the Pleasanton community, and to formally
welcome Afghan refugees that are locating in the Bay Area and offer support as they
transition to a new and unfamiliar life in the United States.
Submitte and Appro d by:
Nelson Fialho
City Manager
Attachment:
1.
