It is not surprising that an increased officer presence results in a higher number of reported
crimes and an increase in the number of weapons and drugs found. The correlation is not
between the increase in the presence of weapons or drugs and the presence of the SRO,
instead the presence of the officer leads to finding more contraband on campus.
PUSD Survev
As part of the preparation for drafting this MOU, PUSD staff conducted a survey with the
PUSD community about the SRO program and also met with students to gather information
and feedback. In Spring 2021, the SRO program survey was sent to PUSD students, staff,
and parents/guardians. Survey results showed a high level of support for the program and a
general increased feeling of safety when having SROs on campus. Overall, 1,240
parents/guardians (Gr. 6-12), 638 students (Gr. 6-12), and 378 staff members completed the
survey. Data points from the survey include:
Parents/Guardians
78.9% of parents/guardians feel that the SRO Program should continue as is or
continue with changes
6.9% of parents/guardians feel we should seek an alternative program
86.7% of parents/guardians indicate that having an SRO on campus contributes to
feeling that their child is safer or somewhat safer
a 3.3% of parents/guardians indicate that having an SRO on campus contributes to
feeling that their child is less safe
Students
a 47.8% of students indicate that the SRO program should continue as is or continue
with changes
■ 12.9% of students indicate that we should look at alternative programs
a 39.3% of students had no opinion
62.9% of students feel school is safer or somewhat safer with an SRO present
• 8.8% of students feel less safe with an SRO present
• 28.4% of students are unsure
PUSD Staff
70.4% of PUSD staff feel the SRO program should continue or continue with changes
12.7% of PUSD staff feel we should look at alternative programs
a 75.6% of PUSD staff indicate having an SRO on campus contributes to feeling safe or
somewhat safe
6.3% of PUSD staff indicate having an SRO on campus contributes to feeling less
safe.
Overall conclusions from the survey indicate:
MOST: The majority of respondents indicated they would like to continue the SRO program
as is.
