The SRO will operate under the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing and
problem solving on school campuses and surrounding neighborhoods.
The SRO will, when appropriate, engage in de-escalation tactics to resolve conflict. De-
escalation is acting or communicating verbally or nonverbally during a potential force
encounter in an attempt to stabilize the situation and reduce the immediacy of the threat
so that more time, options, and resources can be called upon to resolve the situation
without the use of force or with a reduction in the force necessary.
The SRO, when possible, will make the physical arrest of students outside the presence of
other non-involved students. The objective is to preserve the privacy of juveniles.
The SRO will normally wear a Police Department approved uniform, however, the SRO
may wear other appropriate clothing depending upon the activity in which the SRO is
engaged. A Police Department approved uniform includes the traditional uniform or a
polo shirt and 5.11 style khaki pants worn at the discretion of the SRO and their
supervisor. Representatives of the Youth and Community Services Unit and PUSD
designee(s) will explore the feasibility of alternative uniform options during the 2021-22
school year.
MUTUAL COOPERATION
A.
