BACKGROUND
In July 2008, the City Council established the Committee on Energy and the
Environment to advise it on energy and environmental issues, strategies, program
development, and opportunities for energy and water conservation.
The duties of the Committee include supporting the City's General Plan, Climate Action
Plan, and Council priorities as they relate to energy and the environment. This includes
developing measureable strategies for programs and plans, assisting with outreach
events, and providing input on proposed programs and ordinance related to prudent use
of natural resources.
DISCUSSION
Since the Committee's inception in 2008, the City Council has extended its term three
times for a total of 12 years. Based on the level of support and involvement the City has
received from the Committee, staff finds value in making the Committee permanent.
To date, the Committee has focused on development of the Climate Action Plan,
ordinances regarding single use plastic bags and foam containers, rezoning to allow for
vertical access wind turbines, commercial and residential energy programs, energy and
water conservation efforts, public outreach and education, natural resource
management and fleet replacement programs. The Committee remains open and
committed to assisting the City in meeting State legislative requirements, while
supporting the City's General Plan, Climate Action Plan, and Council priorities.
Submitted by: Approved b :
tat dtAi
Becky Hopkins Nelson Fialho
Assistant to the City Manager City Manager
Attachments:
1.
