Stephanie Rauscher expressed her support for the item. She noted Patelco Park has extensive parking
issues and agrees it would be challenging.
Mayor Thorne closed the public hearing.
Councilmember Pentin expressed his support for the item and noted it is overdue for Pleasanton. He
motioned to approve the item.
Councilmember Testa commented it would have been a wonderful addition to Patelco when it was built
but supports the decision to place the all-abilities playground at Ken Mercer Sports Park and seconded
Councilmember Pentin's motion.
Councilmember Narum expressed her support for the item and feels it is a logical progression from the
Sunflower Hill Development.
Councilmember Brown expressed her support for the item and noted Pleasanton is an all-inclusive
community.
Mayor Thorne expressed his support for the item.
MOTION: It was m/s by Pentin/Testa to approve staff's recommendation to begin the design process
for an all-abilities playground at Ken Mercer Sports Park. Motion passed by the following vote:
Ayes: Councilmembers Brown, Pentin, Testa, Narum, Mayor Thorne
Noes: None
Absent: None
MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL
In response to Councilmember Brown's inquiry, City Manager Fialho explained Parks Maintenance
Superintendent Brandon Stewart maintains the Lions Wayside Park and is also the Arborist who
oversaw the analysis that led to the conclusion associated with the tree's removal. He noted Parks
Maintenance Superintendent Stewart consulted with an outside Arborist who agreed the tree is
diseased and will be removed this week. Landscape Architect Gruber reported the tree has been
monitored for years and the hazards and liability outweigh the benefits itself. He reported the plan is to
take a cut of the tree and keep it at Alviso Adobe Park to acknowledge its history in Pleasanton and will
also try to make some benches out of the wood.
Councilmember Narum reported her attendance at the Tri-Valley Mayors' Summit and noted there are
over 100 years of collective service from the outgoing Mayors.
Councilmember Testa requested agendizing face mask enforcement. Mayor Thorne seconded the
request. The request failed for a lack of a third.
COUNCIL REPORTS - None
ADJOURNMENT— The meeting adjourned at 9:36 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Karen Diaz
City Clerk
City Council Minutes Page 8 of 8 September 1, 2020
