o Some community colleges do offer a curriculum with certificate based on a
partnership company's needs — Genentech as an example. There is a potential
to align companies with the same skillset requirements from which to build a
curriculum offering courses with a certificate the company will accept; however,
the Tri -Valley is still very traditional in the sense that employers want employees
that have earned a bachelors (or higher) degree.
There is an exposure challenge as students don't learn about career
opportunities in industries represented in the Tri -Valley.
o Pamela Ott noted there is more conversation regarding company -school
partnerships; this topic will be discussed at a future EVC meeting.
• Create connections to attract fast growing international companies to the Tri -Valley,
with reference to Launching Pad as an example between the U.S. and China.
• In the first half of 2019 there were around 500 new business registrations in the Tri -
Valley, of which 290 were in Pleasanton.
• Net new job growth is from smaller and newer (less than 5 years) companies, not from
later stage companies.
• Is there a change in the thinking of how/to which companies investments are made due
to a shift in age/generation or other factors?
o Traditionally, there are more later stage investments; however, Tri -Valley
Ventures is focused on seed and early stage investment.
• Life sciences is thriving sector for investment: in 2019 YTD more than 50% of venture
capital deals were to life sciences companies
• Do the sectors included in the Mirador Tri -Valley Index (MTVX) represent the company
headquarters here in the Tri -Valley?
o Yes, that is correct.
Brandon Cardwell with i -Gate gave an overview of the recently launched website,
TriValleyConnect.org. The website is a branding tool for the area, showcasing the assets of the
Tri -Valley as an innovation hub and providing connections to employment opportunities
through an automated job board toward creating the connection between local talent and local
companies. The overarching goal is for companies to start, grow and stay here, creating a
strong regional economy with workforce and infrastructure in the same place.
Brandon also discussed the upcoming Life Sciences Summit taking place on October 2, 2019.
Students are encouraged to attend the summit to give them proximity, exposure and spark
excitement in this field as a possibility for their future.
EVC member and guest comments included:
• What markets are highlighted on the website?
o Primarily the Tri -Valley area to advertise the competitive advantage in life
sciences this area offers, for executive decision makers and workers
Could there be potential for making an international connection?
o Could the website be translated in other languages and advertised overseas to
attract international companies to the Tri -Valley?
• A link for TriValleyConnect.org needs to be on both the City of Pleasanton and
Chamber of Commerce websites.
