Manufacturing Trends
In the 1960s, the East Bay's manufacturing sector accounted
for nearly 28 percent of all jobs. Today, the industry comprises
only 8 percent of jobs. Remarkable gains in productivity and
automation, as well as increased international competition, are
major reasons for the decreases. Despite declines in the sector
employment overall, the East Bay's manufacturing output
remains strong - comprising about 15 percent of overall GRP.
In addition, manufacturing activities directly and indirectly
support other economic activities, which keeps the East Bay
thriving and growing.
140,000
120,000
100,000
`c
E 80.E
E 60,000
LU 40,000
20,000
0
Manufacturing Employment
iiiiiiinirManufacturing Employment —4'. of Total Regional Employment
O O O OO O O O O
O O O O O N O O N CN O
N N N N N O O O O O O ON
N N N N N N N N N
8%
1296 „ 6%
c
4%
10% a.
O 2%
5-
89.
8% w 0%
-2%
6% o
11%
4% W -6%
29, $90
o -109.
ae -12%
Source: Manex.
Annual Percent Growth
of Manufacturing Jobs
— East Bay --- ---aVjf,,,a
H H O H H H H H O O O O O O O O O
N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N
Sources: Bureau of Labor Statistics; DatabaseUSA, EMSI, 2019.
Manufacturing Businesses
Annual Manufacturing Business Starts
3,500
3,000
90
80
2,500
70
2,000
60
50
1,500
1 1 1 1 1 1111111111
40
1,000
30
20
500
0
0
0
O O O O O O O .r- N_ M O n ,_O n WW
N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N
_
g o N t 'cT n .D n.
