BACKGROUND
Public libraries have used pop-up programs to reach out to the community and expand the
library outside its walls. Pop-up library programs weave reading and learning culture into
different types of places. Shoppers may not expect to hear a story time when they visit the
mail or experience virtual reality at a senior living community.
DISCUSSION
This fall, Pleasanton Library and Recreation will launch pop-up programs to strengthen the
department's mission to "Discover, Connect and Enjoy". Pop-up programs provide an
opportunity to share popular services such as story times, pilot new programs and reach
audiences that may not use the library. Pop-up programs will be held during the six to
eight-month library meeting room closure.
Featured programs for young children this fall will include pop-up storytimes for infants,
toddlers and preschoolers at such varied locations as Pleasanton Fire Stations, the
Stoneridge Mall, the Pleasanton Police Station, Hively and the Firehouse Arts Center. Pop-
up programs aid young children in understanding the importance of reading in every part of
our lives.
Older children will have the opportunity to see their favorite robots Dash and Dot pop-up at
the Amador Recreation Center on October 19, where they can learn coding skills. Children
of reading age can share stories with canine reading pals at Valley Humane Society for
Paws to Read sessions beginning October 1.
Adults in the community will have plenty to discover at a wide variety of pop-up programs.
Travel enthusiasts can explore the world through Oculus Rift, a virtual reality experience
popping up at the senior housing communities of Kottinger Gardens and Stoneridge Creek,
beginning September 25. Trivia buffs can meet new players and form teams to test their
knowledge of books, sports, movies, theater and culture at a special Library and
Recreation Pub Trivia Night on December 19, at the Firehouse Arts Center. Literacy
learners and seniors can connect at Intermediate English Conversation Classes at the
Pleasanton Senior Center, beginning September 16. Book lovers will have a unique
opportunity to share their own favorite reads at the Books and Coffee program, at the
Senior Center beginning September 12.
All pop-up programs are free of charge. Some programs require registration. For upcoming
dates, times, locations and additional information, community members can follow
Pleasanton Library Pop -Up Programs on Instagram @PleasantonLibandRec or visit the
website calendar online.
Submitted by:
Lia Bushong
Assistant Director of Library and Recreation
Attachment:
1.
