5. Oyster shell and flour, with decomposed granite (DG)
6. Boccemon (a pre -mixed blend of oyster shell, flour and other natural materials)
After developing the list, City staff began evaluating which material would be the most
appropriate for the project. The City's perspective when selecting a court surface is to
use the material that will hold up over time, be low maintenance, and provide a
consistent roll. (Roll was one of the primary complaints of the bocce players with the
existing courts.) It is also important to install a court that does not require a high level of
technical knowledge to properly maintain as the recreation staff responsible for the
maintenance turns over or rotates duties from year to year.
To assist with the selection process, staff conducted surveys to determine which type of
surfacing was most preferable from a playability perspective and a maintenance
perspective. The preferred surfacing options, in order of most preferred to least
preferred, is listed below:
Playability Survey — preferred surface
1. Boccemon oyster shell and flour blend (pre -mixed)
2. Oyster shell and flour (not pre -mixed)
3. Oyster shell and flour with decomposed granite (not pre -mixed)
4. Synthetic turf with sand
5. Synthetic turf without sand
6. EPDM
Maintenance Survey — preferred surface
1. Synthetic Turf (< 1/2 hr per court per week, replacement every 8-10 years)
2. EPDM (1/2 hr per court per week, replacement every 8-10 years)
3. Boccemon (2.5 hr per court per week, 4 hrs per court before each season)
4. Oyster shell and flour with DG (2.5 hrs per court per week, 4 hrs per court before
each season)
5. Oyster shell and flour (5 hrs. per court per week, 4+ hrs per court before each
season)
The results of both surveys were presented to the Bocce Committee. The Playability
Survey results is Attachment 3 to this report. The Maintenance Survey results is
Attachment 4. The Bocce Committee Meeting summary is Attachment 5.
DISCUSSION
The results of the playability survey and the maintenance survey ended up with an .
almost completely opposite listing of the preferred surface material. The players
preferred the Boccemon blend, or some sort of oyster shell and flour blend, while the
preferred court surfacing preference from the maintenance survey was synthetic turf or
the synthetic rubber (EPDM). Although the Boccemon blend was the preferred choice of
the oyster shell and flour blends, from a maintenance perspective, the time and level of
experience required to maintain the Boccemon surfacing (2.5 hours per court per week)
significantly exceeded the time required to maintain the synthetic courts (1/2 hour per
court per week).
