THE CITY OF
19
I PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION
PLEASANTON. AGENDA REPORT
June 13, 2019
Item 4
TITLE: REVIEW THE CONCEPTUAL PLAN, SURVEY RESULTS, AND ESTIMATED
COSTS FOR THE CENTENNIAL PARK BOCCE BALL COURT
RENOVATION AND PROVIDE A RECOMMENDATION
SUMMARY
The Centennial Park bocce ball courts are scheduled for renovation to address issues
that impact the playability of the courts. The renovation will also improve the facility for
users through the addition of shade canopies, access improvements, and improved
lighting. City staff has worked with the Bocce Committee to identify and prioritize
improvements. A concept plan has been created to reflect the input of the Committee,
and staff is ready to move forward with the design and construction, however, the
choice of surface material remains to be decided. For the City, maintenance
requirements are a primary driver with respect to surface selection. Research of other
bocce ball facilities was conducted to evaluate the maintenance requirements/costs
associated with each court surfacing option. Staff recommends the EPDM (Ethylene
Propylene Diene Monomer) surfacing as it can be maintained within current staffing
levels and does not take a high level of expertise to maintain. Staff is seeking review
and a recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Commission on the design and
recommended surfacing.
RECOMMENDATION
1. Review the Centennial Park bocce ball court renovation concept plan, Bocce
Committee survey, maintenance survey, and estimate of probable costs.
2. Receive the staff presentation and public comments.
3. Provide a recommendation to approve the concept design and EPDM surface.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
No direct financial impact results from a Parks and Recreation Commission action. The
construction budget will be determined during the design process and the project will be
publicly advertised for bid. Funding in the amount of $400,000 has been allocated to the
improvements. City Council will consider funding the project as part of the Award of
Construction.
