Access to an Innovative Ecosystem <br />Companies in the Tri -Valley benefit <br />from an experienced entrepreneurial <br />community with a history of developing <br />World -changing technologies anchored <br />by two National Laboratories, <br />The Tri -Valley is home to two world-class <br />National Research Laboratories - Lawrence <br />Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and <br />Sandia Laboratory, collectively known <br />as "the Labs." The Labs attract a highly <br />educated demographic to the region and <br />provide an economic benefit as well. Studies <br />by IMPLAN (Impact Analysis for Planning) <br />estimate that every $1 million in scientific <br />R&D investment yields nearly $1.9 million in <br />economic output, $85o,000 in labor income <br />and lo full-time equivalent jobs.�3 With an <br />annual budget of $3 billion and over 8,000 <br />employees, the Labs' regional presence <br />is of enormous value to the Tri -Valley. <br />The Labs have made a dramatic transition from <br />"closed doors" to actively pursuing commercial <br />partnerships and technology transfers. <br />Companies from all over the world now <br />partner with LLNL to apply high performance <br />computing to business problems to obtain <br />insight, improve products and increase the <br />effectiveness of operational processes. <br />LLNL and Sandia have collaborated on a <br />number of initiatives to encourage technology <br />transfer and entrepreneurial innovation.
