BACKGROUND <br />The Parks division has five (5) park maintenance crews and one (1) median, trails and <br />open space crew. The "park" crews are comprised of four to five (4-5) full-time employees <br />that are responsible for all aspects of park maintenance in a geographic area. The <br />"median" crew is comprised of three (2) full-time employees with responsibilities <br />throughout the entire city. Each crew submits quarterly reports of significant maintenance <br />events in their respective areas. This report is a summary of those events. <br />DISCUSSION <br />Routine maintenance activities for the fourth quarter of 2018 and first quarter of 2019 <br />included: weekly turf mowing, pesticide applications, mulch installation, tree removal, <br />irrigation system repairs and programming, turf renovation, plant installation, leaf removal, <br />holiday light and decoration installation, vandalism repair, sidewalk grinding, stump <br />grinding, equipment maintenance, sidewalk edging, storm clean-up, and weekly play area <br />safety inspections. <br />The work plan for fourth quarter 2018 and first quarter 2019 is mainly focused on proactive <br />maintenance that prepares the entire park system for the following growing season. The <br />maintenance tasks of this quarter include deep -fine turf aeration of sports turf, installation <br />of 190 trees, installation of 420 cubic yards of organic topdress, installation of 45 tons of <br />baseball infield mix, installation of 415 cubic yards of playground fibar,_sod installation, <br />debris removal in drainage swales and drain capture devices throughout the trail system, <br />drinking fountain winterization, and fertilizer application. <br />Project work for fourth quarter 2018 and first quarter 2019 included: Free Little Library <br />installation at Woodthrush Park, new irrigation clock installation at Cubby's Dog Park, Del <br />Valle Parkway sod installation, new trolley and rail installation at Bernal Community Park. <br />Basketball court re -surfacing at Tennis and Community Park, Meadows Park, and Tawny <br />Park, bike racks at 200 Old Bernal, three new owl boxes in the Lake 1 parcel, raptor <br />perches at Marilyn Murphy Kane trail, gazebo and arbor repainting at Val Vista <br />Community Park and Owens Park, new park monument sign at Meadows -Park, and <br />renovation of six roundabout medians on Laguna Avenue. <br />The City's tree trimming vendor, West Coast Arborist (WCA), completed work in District <br />seven which includes: Del Valle Parkway, Black Avenue and Hopyard Road. They are <br />currently working- in District 8 which includes: Bernal Avenue, First Street, Vineyard <br />Avenue, and Valley Avenue. <br />The street median maintenance contractor, Terra Landscape, Inc., focused their main <br />efforts on regularly scheduled autumn maintenance which includes: median shrub <br />pruning and pre -emergent herbicide applications. <br />Page 2 of 10: <br />
