• $374 - Advertising for construction bids
• $4,809- During the period of where curing was slow, aggregate shed from the
street surface causing the need for additional sweeping. The contractor provided
some of the additional sweeping at their cost, and the City also had the streets
swept occasionally by the City's contractor, Clean Streets.
• $2,259 — Material Testing by BSK and Engeo to determine the reason for delay
in curing of the slurry seal.
DISCUSSION
Although the blemished slurry seal in the Valley Trails area and on Sandpiper Way is
functioning to extend the useful life of the underlying pavement, it is not aesthetically
acceptable. American Asphalt has agreed to a price of$42,156 to apply Type I slurry
seal to the area. This price includes all no parking notifications required and traffic
control during the work. Staff negotiated this price with American Asphalt for the
324,275 square feet required to be sealed. This is a cost of$0.13 per square foot.
Currently, Type I slurry seal is bidding for approximately $0.23 per square foot.
American Asphalt is providing this discounted price because they want to stand by their
work, even though all testing performed did not reveal the cause of the slow curing. The
City and American Asphalt are essentially splitting the cost of the corrective repair.
If approved, the slurry will be scheduled for installation in late May of 2019, when there
is no longer a threat of rain and cold weather.
When the construction is complete, staff will prepare a final reconciliation of all costs
associated with the project. This reconciliation will be presented to City Council when
the project is recommended for acceptance per normal practice.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved by:
4u, 1/1\
Stephen 1Ppatrick Tina Olson Nelson Fialho
Director of Engineering Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments:
1.
