BACKGROUND
The City holds its General Municipal Election the first Tuesday after the first Monday in
November in each even-numbered year for the purpose of electing municipal officers; a
Mayor and two Councilmembers. Along with adopting the required resolution calling the
November 6, 2018 election, staff recommends the Council request consent from the
Alameda County Board of Supervisors to consolidate with the Statewide General
Election and for the Registrar of Voters to render specific services to the City related to
the conduct of the election.
State law also requires adoption of a resolution regulating candidates statements. The
most current Resolution adopted in 2012, requires minor revisions to reflect a
terminology change in the Elections Code, sample ballots are now referred to as voter
information guides.
Consistent with past elections and state law, candidates will pay a $25 filing fee and a
$600 deposit for the optional candidates statement. The estimated costs associated
with printing and translating the statement is $1,200.
The nomination period opens Monday, July 16, 2018 and closes Friday, August 10,
2018. Should the incumbent Mayor or a Councilmember not seek reelection, the
nomination period for that office will extend to Wednesday, August 15, for any qualified
candidate with the exception of the incumbent.
Submitted y: Fiscal Review: Approved by:
r
---36, ityj_ .q,,,- /V/(i,t/4 /
Ka n Diaz Tina Olson Nelson Fialho
City Clerk Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments:
1 .
