ATTACHMENT 3
Glossary of Terms
Groundwater: Water beneath the land surface that supplies wells and natural springs.
A groundwater basin is any underground area that has the capacity to store water.
Hardness: A measure of the amount of minerals —typically calcium and magnesium —
dissolved in water. "Hard water" has high concentrations of these minerals. High
hardness can affect the taste of water and lead to mineral deposits on plumbing fittings
and other problems.
Imported Water: Water that is transported from outside the region to Pleasanton's
service area. Pleasanton's primary source of imported water is the State Water Project
provided by Zone 7 Water Agency.
Life Cycle: Concept that compares the cyclical nature of processes, products, and
systems with the cradle to grave life stages (birth, growth, maturity, decay, and death) of
living organisms.
Non-Potable Reuse: Includes all recycled water reuse applications except those
related to water supply augmentation and drinking water (i.e., potable reuse).
Potable Reuse: A general term for the use of recycled water to augment drinking water
supplies.
Recycled Water: Wastewater that has been treated so that it can be used again,
typically used for irrigation.
Wastewater: Water that has been used in an industrial, agricultural, municipal, or
domestic application.
