Karen Gonzales
From: Pleasanton City Clerk nth PL MENTAL MATERIAL
Subject: FW:Isn't it ironic? Provided to the City Council
After Distribution of Packet
Date .;--20 `/S
From:Tom Gill
Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2018 12:10 PM
To: Mayor and City Council<citycouncil@cityofpleasantonca.gov>
Cc: Beverly Gill
Subject: Isn't it ironic?
Dear Mayor and Council:
I have been thinking about the Johnson Drive and Owens drive projects, and I find it ironic that:
1) The city sees the needs for wide roads with many lanes leading into Costco, but not the BART station.
2) The city was able to put together a $ 22 million package for Costco, but can't seem to find $ 1 million for a project which
is very important to Pleasanton commuters and taxpayers.
3) The Owens Drive problem is the result of building diagonal parking for retail tenants, but there are no retail tenants. I
have heard that the developer has been unable to rent the retail space.
4) There is a fund dedicated to alleviating traffic issues. I cannot think of a better use for this money than correcting the
Owens Drive situation. However, I fear that all or most of this money has been committed to helping a multi billion dollar
corporation, which should be paying its own way.
Pleasanton is not Cleveland or Detroit. We should not need to make concessions to attract business. We have the
opposite problem, we are out of roads, out of water, and out of school space. We should be very picky about approving
any new development.
The Owens drive fiasco seems to be a result of state mandated rules for"transit related development." rather than
anything the developer wanted. This just goes to show you that market forces, not government regulation, is the best way
to determine the highest and best use of a piece of land. We should be speaking up, before this problem is repeated all
over the state. I will be contacting Catherine Baker on this matter, and I hope the city does the same.
Tom Gill, CPA
Click here to report this email as spam.
1
