BACKGROUND Type 3 Fire Engines are smaller than standard engines and are primarily used for vegetation and wildland interface fires where homes are amongst the vegetation. The four-wheel capability allows these engines to respond to emergencies in the wildland interface areas of Pleasanton. LPFD currently operates two Type 3 Fire Engines within the city of Pleasanton. The age of Engine 620 is 20 years old, and the age of Engine 623 is 23 years old. The age of these vehicles has created reliability and maintenance challenges which require taking these engines out of service for extended periods of time for repairs. A major challenge to maintaining these engines is the lack of availability of the required obsolete parts and outdated technology. From January 1, 2014 to August 1, 2017, the Mechanics shop has spent a combined total of 846 staff hours and $91,388.71 in maintenance costs. Some of the maintenance repairs had to be contracted out to Alameda County Fire creating additional time delays and costs. DISCUSSION Staff is requesting the purchase of two replacement Regional NWCG Rear Pump Panel Type 3 Fire Engines from EJ Metals, purchased through Golden State Fire Apparatus. This purchase will utilize the Western Fire Chiefs/ Fire Rescue NPPGov purchase consortium program. A total of$400,000 for each engine ($800,000 total) is budgeted in both the FY 2017/18 and FY 2018/19 in the Fire Apparatus Repair & Replacement budget (51320113- 410107). The actual cost of each engine is $350,573.16 bringing the total cost of this purchase to $701,146.32 before sales tax, or$766,002.35 with tax included. If approved, a mid-year adjustment will take place to allocate funding into the current fiscal year.
