In August 2012, the City started the formal process to recruit and officially appoint a <br /> Teen Poet Laureate. In January 2013, the first two (2) students, one from Amador <br /> Valley and Foothill High School(s), were appointed to serve as the City's Teen Poet <br /> Laureates for the remaining duration of the 2012/2013 school year. <br /> Recruitment for the Teen Poet Laureate position for the 2017/2018 school year began <br /> this past spring. As part of the process, the City established a Poet Laureate Selection <br /> Committee to review submitted materials, interview candidates, and recommend <br /> candidates for the Teen Poet Laureate position. <br /> The screening committee interviewed the five (5) applicants for the Teen Poet Laureate <br /> position. Due to the high level of qualified applicants for the Teen Poet Laureate <br /> position and the desire to reach a broader range of youth through poetry, the screening <br /> committee recommended that the Civic Art Commission appoint four (4) Teen Poet <br /> Laureates; two (2) students from Amador Valley High School and two (2) students from <br /> Foothill High School as indicated below: <br /> e Varsha Vaidyanath and Nithya Swaminathan —Amador Valley High <br /> School <br /> e Yasmin Ghaemmaghani and Irene Sha— Foothill High School <br /> On August 7, 2017, the Civic Arts Commission agreed with the Poet Laureate Selection <br /> Committee, and approved their recommendation to appoint Varsha Vaidyanath and <br /> Nithya Swaminathan as the two (2) Teen Poet Laureates representing Amador High <br /> School and Yasmin Ghaemmaghani and Irene Sha the (two) 2 Teen Poet Laureates <br /> representing Foothill High School for one (1) school year term beginning October 2017. <br /> The appointment of four (4) Teen Poet Laureates is a reflection of the quality of <br /> applicants and furthers the cause of promoting poetry in the community. <br /> The four (4) Teen Poet Laureates will serve from September 2017 through May 2018 <br /> and are asked to hold, partner and participate in a variety of literary events in the Tri- <br /> Valley. <br /> Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved y: <br /> Susan Andrade-Wax Tina Olson Nelson Fialho <br /> Community Services Director Director of Finance City Manager <br /> Page 3 of 3 <br />
