In 2006,the California Air Resources Board classified secondhand <br /> Natalie Germuska smoke as a "Toxic Air Contaminant" in the same category as asbestos, cyanide and arsenic - <br /> Billy Kim all of which can lead to serious illness and death. Nonsmoking residents of multi-unit <br /> David Madsen housing complexes who choose to make their units smokefree may still be exposed to <br /> Debbie Newman secondhand smoke that infiltrates their units from other units or common areas, potentially <br /> Sue Padernacht endangering their health. <br /> Lynn Paquin <br /> Mary Strenn While many Californians have made the choice to not allow smoking inside their homes, <br /> Kristi VandenBosch many living in apartments and condominiums are still exposed to drifting toxic secondhand <br /> smoke. More than one in three nonsmokers who live in rental housing are still exposed to <br /> secondhand smoke, which drifts from neighboring units, patios, balconies and common <br /> areas into nonsmokers' units through open windows, doors and shared ventilation systems. <br /> Olivia Gertz By prohibiting smoking in 100%of units, including patios and balconies along with common <br /> President and areas, and ensuring that all residents are aware of these rules, Pleasanton can protect <br /> Chief Executive Officer residents from the dangers of exposure to secondhand smoke,joining over 50 other cities <br /> and counties in California who have already done so. <br /> Each year the American Lung Association in California releases a local State of Tobacco <br /> Control Report which grades local cities and counties on their local tobacco control laws. <br /> Sadly, Pleasanton received a D in the 2017 report in the category of Smokefree Housing. <br /> Visit lung.org/ealifornia 0 0 O@Caiiforniaiung ®Amm erican lung Associaf of <br /> Californ ia <br />
