On behalf of the Alameda <br /> Executive Leadership County Tobacco Control Coalition (ACTCC), we would like to express our support for a smoke- <br /> Co-Chairs: free multi-unit housing ordinance in the City of Pleasanton (Agenda Item 08). <br /> Marcia Brown- Up to 65%of the air in multi-unit housing can be shared with neighboring units.Therefore, it <br /> Machen stands to reason that if one resident smokes,the whole building smokes.All residents in multi- <br /> unit dwellings should have the right to breathe clean air. Individuals that spend the most time <br /> Scott Gerbert <br /> at home are our most vulnerable populations,the elderly, disabled, and children.These <br /> Leadership Board: groups also suffer from the poorest health status in Alameda County,and need their <br /> communities to advocate for public health policy to protect them from exposure to <br /> Marlene Hurd secondhand smoke. <br /> Melanie canton According to the Surgeon General's most recent findings, people exposed to secondhand <br /> Alexandra Winston smoke are 20-30%more likely to have a stroke or coronary heart disease. Furthermore, <br /> nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke are 20-30%more likely to develop lung cancer. <br /> Currently,the State of California has a smoke-free workplace law to protect employees from <br /> Gbeing exposed to secondhand smoke at work. However,there is no such statewide law in <br /> place to protect people in their homes.As more cities pass a smoke-free multi-unit housing <br /> Mission Statement: laws in California,the support for a statewide law strengthens.The ACTCC is very supportive <br /> that the City of Pleasanton wants to join in this cause towards health equity for our <br /> "Our mission is to community. <br /> promote health equity <br /> and social justice by Our Coalition advocates for smoke-free policies throughout Alameda County, but does not <br /> supporting a diverse <br /> alliance of partnerships stigmatize smokers themselves.The Coalition understands that smokers are unfairly victims of <br /> to help protect the tobacco industry and are addicted to nicotine.
