Downtown Parking Strategy and Implementation Plan—Public Comments ATTACHMENT 3
From: Robert Jacobsen [mailto:; ©sbcglobal.net]
Sent: Thursday, March 02, 2017 12:39 PM
To: Shweta Bonn
Subject: Downtown Plan Suggestion - One Way Loop traffic between Main and Peters Ave
Here is a suggestion for our future downtown Pleasanton:
Downtown Plan Update suggestion — "One Way Traffic Loop with sections of
Main and Peters Avenue"
Suggest making Main Street from St John St one way traffic going southbound to Old
Bernal Ave where the loop bears right and then connects with Peters Ave going north
now to be also a one way street.
The loop continues to St John St where the two right lanes (side street parking may
need to be omitted to allow for enough traffic lanes on St John St) now bear right again
looping back onto Main Street going south.
The advantage of a one way loop downtown is it smooths out traffic and also mitigates
cross street traffic such that only turns occur onto Main St. reducing turn congestion as
is currently.
There would have to be one westbound lane from the Rose Hotel to allow traffic coming
south on Santa Rita to access St John St and then one right lane southbound on Peters
Ave to allow access to St Mary St.
On the south end of the loop at Old Bernal Ave, traffic coming from the current library
area on Old Bernal may need one right lane of traffic allowing for access to Main St to
continue south on Main where it reverts to two way traffic towards Bernal Ave.
The loop smooths out traffic, parking, and cross street traffic as cross traffic can only
enter the loop one way preventing crossing over opposing traffic as is current.
At very light traffic hours say after 8 PM to 6 AM all traffic lights on the one way loop
may be set to blinking yellow and all cross street access signal lights sets to blinking
red during these hours. This would allow very light traffic to travel with a minimum of
stop and go also reduce vehicle pollution downtown.
The City of The Dalles OR uses this loop between 2nd and 3rd streets downtown with
adjusted traffic lights to smooth out access and traffic downtown. With our much
higher traffic patterns downtown in Pleasanton the benefits multiply.
Any minor lost of parking spaces to accommodate such as maybe on St John St and Old
Bernal Ave need to be offset with more downtown parking as can be accomplished.
Whatever you do, do not install parking meters as that is a night mare for enjoying a
downtown experience.
Bob Jacobsen Pleasanton CA ph 925
Provided to Planning Commission for March 8,2017 Meeting and City Council for April 18, 2017 Meeting
