Wide roadways are often identified as barriers to both pedestrian and bicycle travel. <br /> The Owens Drive lane reduction significantly reduced the pedestrian and bicycle <br /> crossing distance at two heavily traveled crossings. <br /> Owens Drive was previously a six lane roadway with an acceleration lane and multiple <br /> turn lanes (Figure 1). The crossing distance across this intersection was over 150 feet <br /> crossing with 10 lanes of vehicle traffic. The Owens Drive lane reduction reduced the <br /> crossing to 90 feet and eliminated three of the 10 travel lanes including the northbound <br /> free right turn lane (Figure 2). Similarly, the Iron Horse Trail Crossing was reduced from <br /> a six vehicle travel lane crossing to a four vehicle travel lane crossing, reducing the <br /> exposure time for pedestrians significantly. <br /> Free right turn lanes, sometimes called "slip lanes," are frequently designed for higher <br /> speed right turns. The intersection of Owens Drive and Willow Road was modified to <br /> create a very tight turning radius to limit the ability to make high speed turns to further <br /> promote pedestrian and bicycle safety. <br /> Vehicular speed has been identified as a key indicator of comfort level for both <br /> pedestrians and bicyclists. The Owens Drive lane reduction has an effect on the travel <br /> speed, which is a common byproduct of narrow travel lanes and this reduction provides <br /> a greater level of comfort to both pedestrians and bicyclists. <br /> Bike lanes on both Owens Drive and Willow Road provide improved access to transit <br /> and the Iron Horse Trail. <br /> Figure 2.
