THE CITY OF _ _ _ 6
1 AS4NTON. CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
March 7, 2017
Community Services
TITLE: APPROVE THE DONATION AND LOCATION OF THE PUBLIC
ARTWORK, "AMERICAN DOG" AT CUBBY'S DOG PARK
SUMMARY
On December 6, 2011 at its regular meeting, City Council approved the purchase of
several public art pieces as part of the Harrington Public Art Acquisition Plan Phase II.
Six (6) of the pieces approved in this phase are yet to be donated to the City. Due to the
time that has passed since original approval, the Harringtons have indicated that for a
variety of reasons, it is becoming increasingly more and more difficult to donate the
remaining pre-approved pieces. At a meeting in October 2014, the City agreed to allow
the Harringtons to find suitable replacements for the remaining six (6) pieces. The
Harringtons would like to donate "American Dog," a Cor-Ten steel replica of a dog to be
installed at Cubby's Dog Park located at 3200 West Lagoon Road, instead of one of the
remaining pre-approved six (6) pieces.
In accordance with the City's Public Art Program, `American Dog", was approved by the
Public Art Selection Subcommittee on October 14, 2016, the Civic Arts Commission on
November 7, 2016 and the Parks and Recreation Commission on January 12, 2017. All
commissions recommended this donation and location be forwarded to the City Council
for their review and consideration.
CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council review and approve the location of the public artwork, "American
Dog", inside Cubby's Dog Park at Bernal located at 3200 West Lagoon Road.
PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council review and approve the location of the public artwork, "American
Dog", at the entrance of Cubby's Dog Park at Bernal located at 3200 West Lagoon
Road.
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council review and approve the location of the public artwork, "American
Dog", at the entrance of Cubby's Dog Park at Bernal located at 3200 West Lagoon
Road.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
The artwork "American Dog" which is valued at $1,000 will be donated to the City by
Nancy and Gary Harrington. Pursuant to the terms of the Harrington Art Partnership, it
is the City's responsibility to coordinate and pay for the installation of the public artwork.
The cost of installing the piece is estimated between $1,000- $1,500 and will be funded
through the Public Art Acquisition Fund # 50550110-430107.
