BACKGROUND
"Project Paint Box" is a utility box beautification program that celebrates local artwork
and encourages regional artists to share their creativity throughout the City of
Pleasanton. Vibrant artwork helps deter unsightly graffiti and creates pleasant spaces
for residents and visitors. At the May 5, 2014 Civic Arts Commission Workshop, the
Commission discussed this project and in July, a 'Call for Artists" was placed in local,
regional and national artists' forums, and in the local press. Additionally, several local
artists were personally notified.
Since July 2014, the City Council has approved fifteen (15) designs and all have been
applied to local utility boxes. At the November 7, 2016 Civic Arts Commission meeting,
this untitled design was reviewed and recommended by the Commission.
DISCUSSION
The following design is being recommended for approval and installation:
1. "Untitled" — artist, Bianca Nandzik
a. Artist Description: "This design refers to the endangered species of wildlife
in the region. Since we already have butterflies, insects and reptiles, I
thought it would be nice to complete the list with birds and mammals."
(Refer to attachment 2 for additional detail.)
b. Comments from the Civic Arts Commission include: They love Bianca's
work and feel this box will compliment her other boxes well, especially the
other box also located on Bernal Avenue.
c. The Civic Arts Commission is recommending placement of this design on
the utility box located on the north side of Bernal Avenue, just west of the
southbound 680 off-ramp.
CONCLUSION
The Civic Arts Commission has approved the aforementioned design and is
recommending the design to the City Council for their review and consideration. Once
the design and location is approved and an agreement with the artist is completed, the
artist will have a four (4) week period to complete their work. However, that schedule
may be lengthened due to inclement weather or other unforeseen delays.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approve y:
Susan Andrade-Wax Tina Olson Nelson Fialho
Director of Community Services Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments:
1.
