My middle son is developmentally delayed and attended the Pleasanton School District's special education programs at Donlon Elementary, Harvest Park Middle School, Foothill High School and finally the Transition Program based at Village High School. He is now 27 years old and his father and I are very concerned for his future and where he will live, especially after we are no longer here to take care of him. I have been a strong supporter of the Sunflower Hill (SFH) concept from the beginning and this past summer I had the opportunity to speak about the need for such a project to a member of the Pleasanton City Council. It has truly been discouraging when I am told by one of my elected officials that Sunflower Hill has a better chance of obtaining approval in Livermore than in Pleasanton and that I should just "move my son there". Seriously? Is this the kind of response I should expect from the Community of Character?Tell me to look outside of Pleasanton when there is a housing opportunity for him right here in his hometown? I urge the City Council to do the right thing and approve the Irby Ranch Project which includes housing for 30 individuals with all types of special needs, not just autism!This project, while a wonderful, inclusive community for our special children, also gives parents the opportunity to purchase a home right near Sunflower Hill so that we can continue to be a constant presence in their daily lives. 1
