We were only by chance made aware from a neighbor today (Saturday 1/14/17) that as part of this Tuesday's
1/17/17 City Council Meeting, you have on the consent calendar the above subject item for approval of an
inter fund loan This could approve the removal of 20 trees, the pruning of 2 others, with another having
already been removed from the fence line of the Bonde Property These trees back to our personal residence
and 15 other personal residences in Ventana Hills
We have spoken to many of these neighbors, but not all, whose homes are along this fence line and have not
1
found one that was informed or noticed in any way of either this proposal or the City Council meeting
date We are naturally upset and can't understand how this could have progressed this far with the City
Landscaping and Engineering Division, without any input or notice to those of us that will be directly
affected Not to mention that we have specifically requested to be made aware of any pruning schedule or
plans with the Eucalyptus trees
See the following concerns regarding this subject item
1 Some of the trees slated for removal in this proposal are healthy heritage trees that are literally
located just feet from our back doors Many of us have enjoyed these for nearly 30 years and wish
to continue enjoying them When Shappel built the Bonde Ranch Development (PUD-90-18), the
preservation and care of these were important to us
2 Of the 20 trees in the bid from West Coast Arborists, Inc slated for removal,
a Some of these trees are located on steep slopes of different grades Has an engineer looked at
the removal of trees in these specific locations regarding what the long-term affect would be on
the slope, and whether it could cause sliding of the hillside in the future?
b For those that may want a tree removed, the bid does not include the removal of the
stumps This of concern because eucalyptus suckers will grow from the stump and be a
problem In March 2016 trees #141 Ž were taken down There are currently suckers over
5' tall (see attached pictures) from these tree stumps in less than a year
c With the large equipment the tree company will be using it is important to us that no grading of
a temporary road be done behind our house(s) This could undermine the integrity of the slope
that could cause slides in the future
3 The trees along this fence line have not been trimmed or pruned since March 2010 If there is an
interfund loan being requested it should include money to prune, trim and clean up the trees that
will remain along the tree line so that they can be healthy The maintenance of these trees was
promised to the Ventana Hills neighbors as part of the approval of Bonde Ranch The trees will
decline and continue to be a problem if not properly maintained Several of us have been emailing
with Mr Gruber and other city representatives about the trees, but were not made aware of this
agenda item
4 The Tree Assessment dated March 18, 2015 from Hort Science is not complete There are three
trees along our personal fence line that are not tagged, and appear to be healthy We would prefer
all trees behind our home remain Also, they did not tag the trees past tree #165, specifically the
ones next to the Bolf's fence line at 5054 Independence Drive where they had a large limb break off
in August 2016 I did not check the tree line East of Hopkins Way to see if other trees were missed
We would like the City Council to recommend that the City Landscaping and Engineering Department meet
with all impacted Ventana Hills neighbors regarding the tree line before approving any budget for
maintenance and/or removal of trees In this way the City is working with its residents that will be affected,
and the City Landscaping and Engineering Department can come to the Council with a complete request,
including homeowners input adjacent to this tree line
2
