Tree assessment. Hort Science, Inc.
Bonde Ranch. City of Pleasanton. Page 3
Photo 2. Looking south at blue gum #111.
It was asymmetric in form with more ;" "ts
branches on the east than the west. 4 j
Ake
.* ;0.
Many trees had been topped. The resprouts ` "
that grew after topping developed into large , y '
•
stems. These were vertical near the point of p' •
attachment but bowed outwards high in the ` . r ! ' . .t •
tree. Examples included river red gum ' o,
#105 and blue gums#126 and 132. ,
River red gums and the red ironbark were 4 4.located at the eastern limit of the row. For : ° t
river red gums, trunk diameters ranged from ";. I.
17"to 41"for single-trunked trees. The
largest river red gum#105 was in good
condition. River red gum#123 was 20" and
in fair condition. All other trees were poor.
Red ironbark#113 was small, suppressed
and in poor condition.
Trunk diameters for the 32 blue gums ranged from 10"to 61". Among the largest trees,
#119, 120, and 127 were in fair condition. Blue gum#139 was adjacent to Hopkins Way,
had a large one-sided crown and was in good condition. Overall, 13 blue gums were in
poor condition, 14 were in fair and 5 were good (#111, 114, 122, 130, 139). The
difference between trees in poor and fair condition was the degree to which crown
development had been suppressed. The tallest trees were approximately 80'to 90'.
Roots of several large trees (e.g. #111, 114) had been severed on the south, most likely
during initial grading operations.
West side of Hopkins Way
Twenty-five (25) blue gums and one valley oak were located on the west side of Hopkins
Way(Table 1). Growing conditions were similar to the east side: trees were closely
spaced with crowns that varied from symmetric to asymmetric to suppressed (Photo 3).
Some homes appeared to be closer to the fence on this side of Hopkins than on the east.
Among the 25 blue gums, trunk diameters ranged from 15"to 64". All of the largest trees
were in fair condition: #140 (58"), #148(50"), #154 (52"), #160 (62"), #163 (60") and
#164 (64"). Five (5)trees were in poor condition and 18 were fair. Blue gum#145 (42")
was in good condition and#158 (38")was excellent. The tallest blue gum was#140 at
95'. The upper crown of some trees(e.g. #141, 143, 159)was bowed to the south over
the property line.
Blue gum#155 had a large well-buttressed basal cavity. Exposed wood was dry and
sounded normal when hit with a mallet. Blue gum #164 had a large well-buttress cavity
on the south side of the trunk from 6'to 10'. Margins were well-buttressed but irregular in
shape. Several large stems arose just above the cavity.
