HORTICULTURE I ARBORICULTURE I URBAN FORESTRY Attachment 2
March 18, 2016
Ms Sarah Hosterman 8 i O R T S C I E N C E
City of Pleasanton
PO Box 520
Pleasanton CA 94566
Subject Tree assessment
Bonde Ranch
Dear Ms Hosterman
The City of Pleasanton manages an open space area in the Bonde Ranch development
Between Sherman and Livingston Ways is a row of mature trees The row is bisected by
Hopkins Way Trees in this area were retained when the development was constructed
many years ago Residents are concerned about the nuisance of falling leaves and other
tree debris as well as the potential for a tree or branch to fail You requested that I
evaluate the health and structural condition, as well as the risk associated with the row of
trees I visited the site on March 9 This letter summarizes my observations and
recommendations
Assessment Methods
I examined each tree with a visual assessment from the ground as follows
1 Identify the species and measure the trunk diameter at 54" above the ground
2 Attach a numerically coded metal tag to the trunk of each tree
3 Identify any trees that meet the City of Pleasanton's criteria for Heritage status
4 Evaluate the health and structural condition of each tree on the scale where 0 =
dead, 1 = poor, and 5 = excellent condition
5 Assess the risk using the method described in A Photographic Guide to the
Evaluation of Hazard Trees in Urban Areas (2nd edition, 1994 International
Society of Arboriculture) The focus of target assessment was the residential
properties adjacent to the row of trees
Trees located outside the row and away from residential properties were not assessed
Description of Trees
Sixty-five (65)were evaluated, representing 4 species (Table 1, following page) Valley
oak is native to the Pleasanton area and tree#165 was likely indigenous to the site All
other trees 57 blue gums, 6 river red gums and 1 red ironbark were not native to the
area
All trees were located adjacent to fences that separated the open space from residential
properties (Photo 1, following page) The distance between fence and edge of tree trunk
was generally less than 6' All trees had been pruned over time to remove branches
extending over the property line
HortSclence,Inc I 325 Ray Street I Pleasanton,CA 94566
phone 925 484 0211 I fax 925 484 5096 I www hortsaence corn
