BACKGROUND
The need to construct an additional off-leash dog park was identified in the 2014 Parks
and Recreation Master Plan. In response to the need, City staff began a community
outreach process to identify possible locations for the dog park. This process included
finding a suitable location for the new dog park and hiring a landscape architect to assist
the City with the dog park's conceptual design. After a thorough review by the Parks
and Recreation Commission, the City Council approved the conceptual design and on
April 19, 2016, the City Council approved the construction of an off-leash dog park
located on the northwest corner of the Bernal Property, along the Marilyn Murphy Kane
Trail.
The size of the new dog park is approximately 1.5 acres. The fenced park will include
an area for small dogs and another larger area for all dogs. Both the areas will have
drinking fountains, shade structures, seating, trees (with protective barriers), trash
receptacles and dog waste stations. The larger area will also include dog play
equipment: a seesaw, hoops and a jumping stand.
Although the project is referred to as the Bernal Property Off-Leash Dog Park (T), the
permanent name for the park has not been addressed. The policy for determining
permanent names for parks, as established by City Council Resolution No. 04-019
(Attachment 1), calls for the Parks and Recreation Commission to hold a public meeting
and submit its recommendation, along with all names considered, for final approval by
the City Council.
As part of selection process of identifying a permanent name for the off-leash dog park,
the City Manager requested that the City sponsor a "Dog Park Naming Contest". On
August 3, 2016, the City kicked off the start of the contest the night of the annual
downtown "Pooch Parade". The contest was advertised on the City's and PTownlife.org
websites, the Pleasanton Weekly and at all of the City's recreation facilities.
Contestants were required to be residents of the City of Pleasanton and submit their
entries in person or by mail on or before the deadline (Attachment 2).
The City received over 300 entries and forwarded the names to the Screening
Committee (Attachment 3). The Screening Committee was comprised of four (4)
members from the Parks and Recreation Commission, Valley Human Society and the
Police Department Animal Services program. They reviewed all of the entries and
selected their top 20 names. The names that received the most votes were presented
to the Parks and Recreation Commission for review and consideration.
DISCUSSION
On September 8, 2016, the Parks and Recreation Commission held a public meeting to
consider several names for the off-leash dog park on the Bernal Property. Staff
provided the Commission with the list of 300+ entries from the "Dog Park Naming
Contest", as well as the Screening Committee's recommendations.
