0 0
soil, even minimum excavation for a typical installation is likely to require significant root
pruning. Additionally, compaction reduces the amount of pore space in soil that acts as a water
and oxygen reservoir for roots, which can affect tree health following construction. I do not
recommend excavation or compaction of native soil on this site.
According to Tim Ward, the parking lots must have permeable paving. Modifications that do
not require compaction or excavation will help preserve the trees while meeting the hardscape
requirements. If feasible, consider placing geotextile fabrics on the existing grade and building
the paving on top of the fabric. Omitting a reservoir may also reduce the amount of materials
on top of the roots. I recommend the architects and arborist have a discussion to determine
alternatives that would meet the permeability requirement with minimum impact to the trees.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Tso
Certified Arborist#W E-10270A
Jennifer Tso, ISA Certified Arborist 2
10
