Recruitment for the Teen Poet Laureate position for the 2016/2017 school year began
this past summer. As part of the process, the City established a Poet Laureate Selection
Committee to review submitted materials, interview candidates, and recommend
candidates for the Teen Poet Laureate position.
The Selection Committee interviewed the eight (8) applicants for the Teen Poet
Laureate position. Due to the high level of qualified applicants for the Teen Poet
Laureate position and the desire to reach a broader range of youth through poetry, the
screening committee recommended that the Civic Arts Commission appoint four (4)
Teen Poet Laureates; two (2) students from Amador Valley High School and two (2)
students from Foothill High School as indicated below:
• Kyler Juarez and Nithya Swaminathan —Amador Valley High School
• Kyle Mular and Irene Sha — Foothill High School
On August 15, 2016, the Civic Arts Commission agreed with the Poet Laureate
Selection Committee, and approved their recommendation to appoint Kyler Juarez and
Nithya Swaminathan as the two (2) Teen Poet Laureates representing Amador High
School and Kyle Mular and Irene Sha the (two) 2 Teen Poet Laureates representing
Foothill High School for one (1) school year term beginning October 2016. The
appointment of four (4) Teen Poet Laureates is a reflection of the quality of applicants
and furthers the cause of promoting poetry in the community.
The four (4) Teen Poet Laureates will serve from September 2016 through May 2017
and are asked to hold, partner and participate in a variety of literary events in the Tri-
Valley.
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: A pp roved by:
Susan Andrade-Wax Tina Olsen Nelson Fialho
Community Services Director Director of Finance City Manager
Page 3 of 3
