City of Pleasanton Legislative Platform 2016
oeo
L._ LEAGUE° 1400 K Street,Suite 400•
916.658.8200tFax:9California 58.8240
cni n orw' www.cacities.org
CITIES
March 29,2016
The Honorable Loni Hancock
Chair,Senate Committee on Public Safety
State Capitol,Room 2031
Sacramento,CA 95814
RE: SB 1221(Hertzbern)—Firefighters:Interaction with Mentally Disabled Persons
Notice of Support
Dear Senator Hancock:
On behalf of the League of California Cities,I am pleased to announce our support of Senate Bill
1221 (Hertzberg).
This measure is a potentially important extension of existing Peace Officer Training and
Standards(POST)aariculum on coursework regarding mentally disabled persons,to California
firefighters and fire departments. SB 1221 authorizes, but does not mandate, the Commission on
POST to make such course-work available to fire services for the first time.
Firefighters, like peace officers, come into contact with mentally disabled persons with a fair
amount of frequency. Proper care and treatment of the mentally disabled will be facilitated by
this legislation, which creates a pathway to allowing firefighters to obtain appropriate training in
how to assess, interact with, and provide assistance to this population.
Should you have any questions regarding the League's position on this measure, please feel free
to contact me at(916)658-8252.
Sincerely,Co... --
w;—
Tim Cromartie
Legislative Representative
cc: The Honorable Robert M.Hertzberg
Members,Senate Committee on Public Safety
Molly Lau,Counsel,Senate Committee on Public Safety
Eric Csizmar,Consultant,Public Safety,Senate Republican Caucus
20IPage
