BACKGROUND
The family of artist Guillermo Wagner Granizo approached the City of Pleasanton and
indicated their interest in donating a one of kind piece titled, "Self-Portrait" to the City's
public art collection. Mr. Granizo's sons, Ron and Bob have shared with staff that their
father felt very connected to the piece, "Pleasanton Centennial" that he created for the
city before he passed away. Because of this strong connection, his sons would like to
donate the only self-portrait ever created by their father to the City, with the hopes that
the piece could be installed near the "Pleasanton Centennial" towers located at Civic
Park.
Guillermo (Bill) Wagner Granizo was commissioned in 1993 by the Pleasanton
Centennial Celebration Committee to create two (2) projects honoring Pleasanton's
1994 Centennial. The first, the "Pleasanton Centennial" towers is located in Civic Park.
The second, which was a series of tiles along Main Street sidewalk, was never begun
due to Mr. Granizo's untimely death (Bill Granizo passed away ten (10) days after the
completion of"Pleasanton Centennial" towers).
In May 2016, both the Civic Arts and Parks and Recreation Commissions reviewed the
artwork and unanimously recommended that the City Council accept the piece and
consider installing it in Civic Park near the "Pleasanton Centennial" towers.
DISCUSSION
The piece, "Self-Portrait" by Guillermo (Bill) Wagner Granizo was completed in 1988.
The piece is 40" tall, 40" wide and 3"deep, and is estimated to weigh 75 pounds. It is
made of glazed and fired terracotta tile, which are the same materials that were used in
the creation of "Pleasanton Centennial" towers. The family has valued the work at
$5,000.
The family has requested that the piece to be installed near the "Pleasanton Centennial"
towers. The exact location will be identified with the assistance of the City's Engineering
Operations Services Department(s).
Submitted by: Fiscal Review: Approved by:
afr-----erte4toter
Susan Andrade-Wax Tinaâś“Olson Nelson Fialho
Director of Community Services Director of Finance City Manager
Attachment:
1.
