BACKGROUND
The State of the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act
applies a CRV tax on beverages to encourage recycling and litter reduction. A portion
of that tax is available to cities and counties that want to partner with the State in
maintaining its 80 percent recycling rate for all CRV beverage containers.
Funds are calculated by CalRecycle with each city being eligible for a minimum of
$5,000 or an amount based on a per capita basis, whichever is greater.
Eligible activities include:
• New or existing curbside recycling programs
• Neighborhood drop-off recycling programs
• Public education promoting recycling programs
• Litter Prevention and clean up where the waste stream includes beverage
containers that will be recycled.
• Cooperative regional efforts among two or more cities or counties, or both
• Other beverage container recycling programs
• Supporting AB 341 Mandatory Commercial Recycling requirements
o Infrastructure for businesses to recycle beverage containers
o Support for new or existing beverage container recycling programs for
mulit-family residential dwellings.
o Public education and outreach that includes a beverage container
recycling component.
DISCUSSION
If funding is awarded, City staff will administer funds according to the eligible criteria
allowed by the program and select activities that will best meet the City's Strategic
Objective of Environmental Awareness.
Submitt d by: Fiscal Review: Approve by:
f /<1
Brian Dolan Tina Olson Nelson Fialho
Assistant City Manager Director of Finance City Manager
Attachments:
1.
