BACKGROUND
"Project Paint Box" is a utility box beautification program that celebrates local artwork
and encourages regional artists to share their creativity throughout the City of
Pleasanton. Vibrant artwork helps deter unsightly graffiti and creates pleasant spaces
for residents and visitors. At the May 5, 2014 Civic Arts Commission Workshop, the
Commission discussed this project and in July, a 'Call for Artists" was placed in local,
regional and national artists' forums, and in the local press. Additionally, several local
artists were personally notified.
Since July 2014, the City Council has approved eleven (11) designs and all have been
applied to local utility boxes. Recently, the Foothill High School Mural Club approached
City staff and asked if they could submit a design for the box located in Front of Foothill
High School.
At the January 4, 2016 Civic Arts Commission meeting, three (3) students from the
Foothill High School Mural Club presented their design to the Civic Arts Commission.
The students addressed the concept of their design and how the design would be
painted and maintained.
The Civic Arts Commission reviewed the design and approved it for placement on the
utility box located in front of Foothill High School at 4375 Foothill Road.
DISCUSSION
The design submitted by the Foothill High School Mural Club has been approved by the
Civic Arts Commission for recommendation to the City Council. The following design is
being recommended for approval and installation:
1. "Untitled" —artist, Foothill High School Mural Club
a. Artist Description: "It depicts Foothill High School and its surrounding
natural beauty, Pleasanton Ridge, and animals (there are several falcons
as our school mascot is a falcon," (Refer to attachment 2 for more details.)
b. Comments from the Civic Arts Commission: very appropriate, love that the
students presented a life-size example of their work
c. The Civic Arts Commission is recommending placement of this design on
the utility box located in front of Foothill High School at 4375 Foothill
Road.
CONCLUSION
The Civic Arts Commission has approved the aforementioned design and is
recommending the design to the City Council for their review and consideration. Once
the design and location is approved and an agreement with the artist is completed, the
artist will have a four (4) week period to complete their work. However, that schedule
may be lengthened due to inclement weather or other unforeseen delays.
