THE CITY OF ^_ 9 •7 j .£ASANTONm CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT January 19, 2015 Police TITLE: TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP OF POLICE CANINE "CAMO" TO OFFICER TIM MARTENS SUMMARY Police Service Canine Camo is thirteen years old and has reached the end of his service life due to his age. As has been past practice, we need to transfer ownership and responsibility of Camo to a canine handler and purchase a veterinary insurance policy for future medical needs. RECOMMENDATION In keeping with past practice, it is recommended that ownership and responsibility of Camo be transferred to his long time partner and handler Officer Tim Martens for one dollar. Additionally, as in previous examples of police canine retirements, a medical insurance plan be provided by the City of Pleasanton for a period of three years as a means of mitigating post retirement medical costs associated with serving the community. It is therefore recommended that the City of Pleasanton agree to pay $600.00 of medical care for Camo at the City approved veterinarian for each of the next three calendar years. FINANCIAL STATEMENT The fiscal impact associated with the recommendations will include mitigating the post retirement medical costs associated with Camo's medical care. This benefit will begin January 1, 2016 and continue through December of 2018. The fiscal impact will not exceed $1,800.00 and could be less depending on the life span of Camo. Traditionally, Police Service Canines life expectancy following retirement is two to three years.
