With a mission of saving lives by improving lung health <br /> Secretary and preventing lung disease, the Lung Association strongly supports measures to protect <br /> Lynn Paquin people from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke in outdoor areas. We believe that <br /> Executive everyone has a right to breathe clean and healthy air where they work and play. <br /> Debra Ashby, RN According to the U.S. Surgeon General,there is no risk-free level of exposure to <br /> Hassan secondhand smoke. In 2006,the California Air Resources Board classified secondhand <br /> Bencheqroun, MD smoke as a"Toxic Air Contaminant"in the same category as asbestos, cyanide and arsenic— <br /> Cheryl Calhoun all of which can lead to serious illness and death. <br /> David Cooke, MD <br /> Afif El-Hasan, MD Children,pregnant women,the elderly and those with chronic illnesses are especially <br /> Billy Kim vulnerable to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. In fact, secondhand smoke exposure <br /> David Madsen can cause asthma in children who have previously not had any symptoms, and is a powerful <br /> Malissa Keith trigger for children and adults who do have asthma. Secondhand smoke is also a serious <br /> Stephen O' <br /> Stephen Kane <br /> Sue Padernacht health threat for nonsmoking adults. It causes lung cancer in those who haven't previously <br /> Marsha Ramos smoked and increases the risk for heart disease, stroke and chronic lung problems. <br /> Robert Sawyer, Ph.D. <br /> Mary Strenn Therefore, adopting laws that restrict smoking in outdoor areas, especially those where so <br /> Kristi VandenBosch many children and families frequent,will protect residents from exposure to a toxic air <br /> Jeffrey Winter contaminant.These laws also help protect the environment by reducing fire hazards and the <br /> litter of toxic cigarette butts,creating a healthier atmosphere in your community. <br /> Olivia Gertz Each year the American Lung Association in California releases a local State of Tobacco <br /> President and Control Report which grades local cities and counties on their local tobacco control laws. <br /> Chief Executive Sadly, Pleasanton received a C in the 2015 report in the category of Smokefree Outdoor <br /> Officer Areas.
