FW: drought suggestions SUPPLEM t' D1 tiro RNATB)'
provided City Council
From: Howard Mendenhall (mailto:mendenhalls1 comcast.net] After Dlattittuticn of Packet
Sent: Saturday, April 18, 2015 6:08 PM i
To: Mayor and City Council Do1RY0
Subject: drought suggestions
Dear Mayor and City Council members;
We are unable to attend the Tuesday evening,April 21st council meeting where I believe the drought issue will
be discussed.
Please consider the following. Last year residents who did not meet the 25% mandatory water restrictions
were warned and/or fined. It is imperative this year that warnings should not be done again. Everyone knows
we are in a very serious drought condition. Please put some teeth into our mandatory water restrictions by
enforcing the penalties! Last summer we saved 53%on our summer water bill by drastic cutbacks to lawn
watering and eliminating our vegetable garden as well as zealously saving water in our kitchen sink, showering
less frequently, capturing our shower water, low flow toilets, etc. Our front and back lawns are now dead and
we are hauling water in five gallon buckets from the water treatment plant to keep some of our bushes and
ferns alive. Next Fall we will replace our dead grass with native landscaping.
What has prompted this letter to you is the fact that although almost all our neighbors in our area, (Vintage
Hills) have also let their lawns go brown it is very distressing to see our city parks so green! If you have cut
back 25% and the lawns are still green the city has obviously been overwatering in the past. We want to see
the city parks with brown spots just like the neighborhoods. Please set a good example.
The city of Monterey through the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District is offering Water Wise
Workshops. Why can't our city do the same thing? Monterey is offering two workshops, Gray water and
Rainwater harvesting workshops including system design and maintenance, permitting requirements, hands-
on demonstrations and available rebates. For more information on what Monterey is doing go to
www.mpwmd.net/workshops
Please consider these suggestions as you talk about the water crisis on Tuesday evening.
Thank you.
Howard & Diana Mendenhall
Vintage Hills residents
Click here to report this email as spam.
1
