The purpose of this chapter is to promote public health, safety and welfare and to <br /> establish reasonable and uniform regulations for beekeeping: on land in the A (Agricultural) <br /> zoning district; for properties with detached, single-family homes located in the R-1 (One- <br /> Family Residential) zoning district and RM (Multi-Family Residential) zoning district; and for <br /> properties with detached, single-family homes located in the Downtown Specific Plan Area. <br /> 18.103.020 Definitions. <br /> For the purposes of this chapter, certain words and terms used are defined as follows: <br /> A. "Absconding" or "abscond" means the permanent departure of the majority of the bees <br /> within a colony. <br /> B. "Bee" means any stage of the common domestic honey bee, Apis Mellifera species. <br /> C. "Beekeeper" means a person who keeps bees. <br /> D. "Beekeeping" means the maintenance of bee colonies in hives. <br /> E. "Brood" means immature bees, in various stages of development, before they emerge <br /> from their honeycomb cell. <br /> F. "Flyway barrier" means the barrier used adjacent to the hive opening that forces bees to <br /> fly upwards. <br /> G. "Hive" means a structure for the housing of a bee colony. Hives are typically a series of <br /> boxes stacked one on top of the other. <br /> H. "Requeen" means to replace the queen bee in a colony with a younger and more <br /> productive queen. <br /> 1 <br />
